With over 200 applications, the first registration for the “Drošas kopienas” program has concluded

31.03.2026

On March 21, the first registration period for the neighborhood community development program “Drošas kopienas” concluded, and the strong response clearly reflects Latvian communities’ desire to grow – 225 applicants from municipalities across Latvia signed up for the program.

The applications reveal a clear trend: people want to live in safer, more cohesive, and trust-based communities. Regionally, communities in Vidzeme were the most active, submitting over 50 applications, closely followed by communities in Zemgale, Riga, and Pierīga. More than 30 applications came from Kurzeme and Latgale, and the program also drew significant interest in Sēlija. During the program’s first intake, 60 communities from across Latvia are planned to participate, with four more registration rounds scheduled through 2029.

Participation in the program will give communities the opportunity to assess their current activities, identify development opportunities, and work purposefully toward implementing them – with the support of mentors, funding, and various experience-building activities. After completing the program, communities will become part of the program’s alumni network.
