CAL calls on the incoming government to strengthen security, highlighting the role of civil society 

The Civic Alliance - Latvia (CAL) calls on the incoming government to take a broader view of national security, emphasizing that civil society and independent media are just as important as defence and effective governance in ensuring democratic resilience. 

The CAL emphasizes that Latvia needs a long-term, state-supported policy for strengthening civil society organizations, as this supports democracy, social equality, crisis response, and overall national security. 

According to CAL Director Kristīne Zonberga, Latvia faces challenges such as inequality, regional disparities, rising living costs, and declining trust in public institutions. In this context, national security depends not only on military capacity but also on societal resilience, participation, and unity. 

The CAL also highlights that a strong civil society with active citizen participation is a cornerstone of democracy, as outlined in the National Security Concept, and calls for greater public involvement in political and civic processes. 

Finally, the CAL urges the new government to engage in open, cooperative dialogue with civil society and recognize NGOs as equal partners in building a secure and socially just Latvia.
