We invite CSOs to get involved in the process of drafting the new Law on Local Governments

On 26 August, the Saeima deputies from the Public Administration and Local Government Committee and CSOs got acquainted with the drafting of the new Law on Local Governments, as well as discussed the issues to be included in the draft law and the proposed solutions to improve the legal regulation of local government work. According to the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the MEPRD has been instructed to develop and submit the new draft Law on Local Governments to the Cabinet of Ministers by 31 October, therefore a working group has been operating for some time with regular participation of LALRG, LALC and MoJ. Kristīne Zonberga, Director of the Civic Alliance - Latvia, called for the involvement of civil society organisations and wider consultations with the population in local governments, which are the direct target audience, at least in the further process of drafting the law. At the meeting of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Non-Governmental Organisations and the Cabinet of Ministers, the Director of CAL also invited the MEPRD to present the draft law at the September meeting before submitting it to the meeting of State Secretaries.

After the meeting of the Saeima Committee, the MEPRD invited several organisations, including the Civic Alliance - Latvia, to a meeting on September 3 to discuss the department's draft on public information and involvement in the work of municipalities prepared by the MEPRD.
